When Jesus said, “To whom much is given, of him much is required,” the concept he was clearly discussing was stewardship, not ownership. People who are hungering for ownership of the herd need to realize that they will be required to keep the night watch, as well as shear the sheep when the time comes.
I am working on discerning how this term applies to my business and me. For example, as an author I am not the owner of my books, but a steward of the information that has been given to me. As a consultant I have been given certain talents and abilities “in trust” that I will use for the greater good of God and others. Am I doing that? The answer to that question plays itself out on a daily basis. If I consider myself an owner of the material, as soon as the material is published, my work is done. But if I see myself as a steward of the material, my work continues until the day I no longer have breath, or the true Owner returns. There is a big difference.
Do you see yourself as an owner or servant?
