I once had the privilege of being escorted to a speaking engagement by a young minister from Russia. He had read the book Jesus, CEO, and said that many of the thoughts in the book had challenged him. I likewise found some of his interpretations of scripture interesting, as well. He said, “My friends sometimes ask, ‘Uri, why isn’t God answering my prayer? Why isn’t he taking this problem away from me?’ And you know what I tell them, Laurie?” he stated, waving his hands dramatically as he also maneuvered us through traffic. “I tell them—’That’s easy, you idiot! He doesn’t answer your prayer because he wants you to grow up! He is tired of baby-sitting! Maybe he is waiting for you to become the son or daughter who will make him proud! Quit asking for relief and start showing some belief!’ “ He laughed joyously as we made the next turn.
God has released us so we can grow. “Greater things than I have done shall you also do.” Jesus said.—John 14:12.
Michelangelo’s poignant rendering of the creation shows God’s outstretched hand releasing Adam to the world. Two outstretched hands, only inches apart, so aptly describe our relationship to God … so close … yet so far away.
When Jesus left, did he really go? If not, how and where does he still remain present today?
