“When my book Jesus in Blue Jeans was finally published, the greater feeling for me was that I had done what I promised God I would do. In many ways, that book will always be my favorite, if only for that reason. I rejoiced over an oath fulfilled.
If we’ve offered ourselves to our Creator and given all of ourselves to him, even our work, then our work is to be done as something we promised we’d do in his honor. We must remember that we are doing our work as an oath and a prayer to God. We see this in 2 Chronicles 15:15: “All Judah rejoiced about the oath because they had sworn it wholeheartedly. They sought God eagerly, and he was found by them. So the LORD gave them rest on every side.”
In all the psalms David wrote, rejoice was the most consistent theme of his soul. No wonder God loved him so much! If you look around, you will see all the earth rejoicing at the presence of the Lord. Creation itself sings of his majesty, his amazing work. When told to rebuke his disciples for praising him too loudly, Jesus said, “If they keep quiet, the stones will cry out!”
You know why God created the oceans?
For the whales to play in.
I have goldfish in my pond that deliberately swim through the turbulent part of the water caused by the swirling pump filter … as if I’ve created a water park for them to delight their senses. In their own way, they are rejoicing at being alive in God’s creation.
Can you begin to see your workplace as a place to play, to celebrate, to rejoice, rather than a place of drudgery and endless tasks? Might you begin to note how God is present in each coworker and in the work you do?
God says to us, “Rejoice!”
Even some of the grumpiest prophets end up saying, “Rejoice!”
And Jesus, our Career Counselor, wants us to rejoice.
For you who revere my name, the sun of righteousness will rise with healing in its wings. And you will go out and leap like calves released from the stall.
1. Where and how are you allowing life to pass you by?
2. Where and why are you constantly “staging things” for others but refusing to rejoice in them yourself?”
