Naomi, in the Bible, offers a vivid example of someone whose career path was brought to a fork in the road. Suddenly bereft of her sons and husband through death, she faced an uncertain future. Unaware of how God is in the business of regeneration, she could see only a cursed existence stretching out before her, a widow forevermore alone and forgotten. But God had regeneration in store for her, and it came in the form of her daughter-in-law Ruth, who spoke these oft-repeated words in marriage ceremonies: “Whither thou goest, I will go; … thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God” (Ruth 1:16 KJV). God had a plan to make Naomi new again. He can do the same for you.
Laid off? God’s still on the job.
Retired? God is never idle.
Fired? God stands by.
Forgotten? God remembers.
Passed up? God sees.
C. S. Lewis once said, “You have never met a mere mortal.” This means your capacity to accept and expand into new roles and “stories” is infinite. Open yourself up to the possibilities, and be amazed. Unite again with the Messiah, and listen to his words for you, his plans for you, his hope for you; then watch your soul renew.
